Aligarh | The City

Aligarh is a historic city of north India. Formerly known as Kol, it is famous for its “Ganga–Jamuni Tehzeeb” as the city lies in the middle portion of the doab, the land between the Ganges and the Yamuna rivers. Aligarh is notable seen as the seat of great learning, shaped as Aligarh Muslim University, which was founded here as Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875 by the great visionary and social reformer Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.  It is situated at a distance of 130 km Southeast of Delhi on the Delhi-Howrah rail route and the Grand Trunk Road. It is well connected by railways and roadways from surrounding major cities. The University campus is 2 km away from the Aligarh Railway Station.

Aligarh Muslim University

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is a NAAC accredited “A+” institute and  occupies a unique position amongst universities and institutions of higher learning in the country. It has been ranked 8th by NIRF and 5th by IIRF ranking agencies in 2024.

Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College - Aligarh Muslim University

The department of Surgery was established in 1964 and received NMC (formerly MCI)  permission to start the programme of M.S. in General Surgery in 1971. Four super-speciality departments (Plastic surgery, Paediatric surgery, Cardiothoracic surgery & Neurosurgery) were subsequently established and separated from the surgery department.

Currently the working strength of department compromises of 16 faculties, 6 senior residents & 65 junior resident doctors. With 215 indoor beds, 4 elective OTs & 2 emergency OTs, the department is performing all kinds of general and abdominal surgical procedures including colorectal and hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeries. Various basic and advanced laparoscopic surgeries including Bariatric surgeries are being performed. Facilities of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures are also available. The department has organized many conferences, CME's, and workshops like UPASICON (2005, 2014, 2021), mid-term CME IHPBA (2019), Surgery Update (2018, 2019, 2021), Bariatric Surgery Workshop (2018), Woundcarecon2023, extension lectures and others.
